Thalpe is also known as the Peak point, Thalpe usually offers chest height waves but can go up to 5+ ft. While it’s only a minutes’ ride by tuk tuk from Unawattuna, it’s mostly an overlooked surf point due to better surf points down the road and its invisibility to the main road. In thalpe Surf break, the to paddle out is in front of the Curry & Tea Shop 200 meters down the road, where they sell coconuts on the beachside of the street. That way You don’t hit the shallow coral there is in front of the “Coral Beach Hotel” right away. Thalpe break also offers both lefts and rights waves. The Lefts push you to the shallow reef and the Rights are more flat. Thalpe is probably the most serene location in the south coast due to its tranquil villas, clean landscape and crystal green water. If you want to surf here, you can stay in a villa or a cheap little guest house in Thalpe. Some prefer staying in Unawatuna and taking a tuk tuk but it can be costly. Localities are friendly and all they want is clean surf and may be your dinged surf board if you’re willing to donate. When the surf’s not up in Thalpe, you can travel down to Koggala or Kabalana which are the closest surf breaks to the Peak.
